Brightspeed is offering services in parts of Alabama, Indiana, North Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin on its new XGS-PON network.

Brightspeed, which consists chiefly of ILEC networks acquired last year from Lumen Technologies, plans to reach 1 million homes and businesses with the fiber service by the end of the year.

New areas will come online on a rolling basis through the balance of the year, the company says.

XGS-PON technology can support speeds up to 10 Gbps symmetrically, although Brightspeed didn't say if it would offer those speeds to start. A plug-and-play distribution network, cloud platforms and geospatial software are accelerating the planning, design, construction and maintenance of the network, the company said.

Brightspeed plans include deploying Wi-Fi 6 to support the offering.

The service provider's footprint consists of more than 6.5 million locations in mostly rural and suburban areas in the midwest, southeast and parts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Brightspeed currently has more than 1 million customers. It plans to invest at least $2 billion to bring services to more than 3 million homes and businesses in the next half-decade, mostly targeting areas bypassed by fiber and advanced technology.
