Google Fiber will roll out symmetrical 5 Gbps and 8 Gbps services beginning in early 2023, the company says.
Consumers who sign up now will be able to sample the new service beginning next month. A google Fiber blog post points to Utah, Kansas City – the initial Google Fiber city – and Des Moines as early test sites.
Full commercial availability will begin early next year, Google said, although it did not detail specific markets. Both speed options will come with a Wi-Fi 6 router (though subscribers are free to use their own), two mesh extenders and professional installation. The service will be priced at $125 per month for 5 Gbps service and $150 per month for 8 Gbps service.
Google Fiber says that it is "committed" to making the service available without contracts, data caps or installation fees. The wording sounds like it is more of an intention than a promise, however.
The post says that 2 Gbps services likely suffice for gamers and power streamers. The faster services are aimed at people such as creative professionals, people who work in the cloud with large data sets or need minimal lag time, such as financial professionals executing trades.
The company is also working towards 20 Gbps service.
"While we can't predict the future, we believe that video quality never seen before, virtual experiences that seem real to the touch, gaming as fast as you can play, (and who knows what else?) are right around the corner," Amalia O’Sullivan Google Fiber's Director of Product Management, said in the blog post, "This vision starts with our commitment to delivering great internet. With the help of content partners and device manufacturers, we’re excited to usher in the next-generation internet experience for Google Fiber customers."
Last month, Google Fiber CEO Dinni Jain wrote a blog post in which he pointed to ever-faster symmetrical multi-gigabit speeds and superior customer service as the future.
After a bit of a lull, Google Fiber is also apparently in expansion mode.
