The overall experience with netTerrain has been very positive. Customer support is quick. The software is easy to learn and use.
This software provides a centralized location for tracking Fiber and Copper cabling. This eliminates the need to dig through several different documents to look up information on the physical network. We were using a combination of maps, spread sheets, and old contract proposals to try to determine how exactly our fiber was connected. This is not an easy task when you have several locations where you have multiple cables spliced to a 244 strand fiber cable or three cables connected in a ring splice. Once you have the physical network infrastructure modeled in netTerrain it makes it much easier to plan out network changes and after the changes are made it is easy to update netTerrain to show the changes. The integration with Openstreetmap also makes netTerrain useful as a GIS tool. This allows for more accurate maps of our outside plant fiber. This is much more useful than our old maps that just used Visio to guess how cable was run between handholes. The ability to fully model a network closet is nice so when you look up what is available for use you also get to see the layout of the closet before you even leave your office.
While there is an expansive catalog of equipment and cables that comes with the software. I often run into a closet where were have some ancient patch panel that is easier to just model from scratch rather than try to use something premade. Fiber splicing often needs a costume splice point made because of how many locations we have multiple cables splice together outside. Luckily building your own custom equipment for the catalog is easy.
Reason for choosing netTerrain OSP
netTerrain was the most cost effect peace of software that we found that was GIS enabled and could track from outside plant all the way to an end user if desired. It was also user friendly and easy to learn.

my overall feeling are very positive. We planned it to use as a netviz replacement, the migration was smooth and easy. and the result is more than what we expected we use more features than we planned before
- we migrated a very big netviz project, the result was 99% the same like netviz, only a small amount of manual work needed - the basic features are very similar like in netviz, so the team were able to use netTerrain immediately - by integration, we can automatically keep the diagrams up to date
- some protocols are missing from the discovery tool, like CDP, LLDP

The sales and support staff were terrific in getting us setup and trained in the software. Any questions I have had or custom template builds I needed were responded to very quickly. I have never dealt with such a great support system. NetTerrain OSP was exactly what I pictured when I realized we needed to document our campus OSP in a visual way.
What caught my eye the most with this software was its ability to be customized for our particular needs.
Compared to the alternatives and for the price there is not much to dislike.
Reason for choosing netTerrain OSP
Cost, custom options and a great user interface.
