Fiber optic services speeding to Volusia County

Sep 16, 2023Sep 16, 2023

Wire 3 delivers high-speed internet service using fiber optic technology at the lowest price possible.

Suddenly Volusia County finds itself with two companies offering fiber optic internet service.

Wire 3 is already in the New Smyrna Beach area. Metronet will offer service soon in Daytona Beach, Holly Hill and Ormond Beach.

Neither Charter Spectrum or AT&T, the existing internet service providers in Volusia, offer fiber optic service.

A national search for a market where they thought they would be successful led Wire 3 to New Smyrna Beach, according to CEO Jai Ramachandran.

"The challenge for us is not can we do it; it's can we expand as fast as we want," Mr. Ramachandran said. "We did a nationwide search for a market; we specifically chose this area. In 10 years, maybe even sooner, in every major metropolitan area in this country, you will have a fiber optic internet choice."

Wire 3 Holdings Inc., an all-fiber, 10 gigabit internet service provider, will eventually expand its service throughout Volusia, Brevard, Indian River and St. Lucie counties. Early adopters in New Smyrna Beach are already using the new service. Edgewater and Ormond Beach residents will be next.

Using fiber optic technology to ensure the fastest, most reliable internet connection possible, Wire 3 offers bandwidth options designed to provide customers with the flexibility and high-speed internet access they need, at an affordable price.

Much like cable internet service, a line is run from the connection at the street into your home. To install the fiber optic system, the company can either use existing electric poles already in place or they can drill underground and pull fiber through conduit.

"On a copper network, electricity is moving along that copper, limited by how fast electricity is," Mr. Ramachandran said. "On fiber optic it is literally beams of light shooting down glass."

He added, "Our pricing is a real bargain. We are going after pricing simplicity. The reason we are building New Smyrna first is the response we’ve gotten from the city there has been phenomenal."

Wire 3's introductory offer is $60 a month for 10 gigs per second for two years. There are no data caps; you can download or upload as much data as you want. There are no fees or taxes attached. The company does not ask for a deposit, they start billing you after they install. Included in the price is Wi-Fi for the entire house.

The roll-out of Wire 3's service depends on market demand, Marketing Director Kevin Aubrey said. "Wire 3 fiber optic internet offers symmetrical speeds to eliminate buffering (matching upload and download speeds) and is faster, more affordable, and more reliable than current internet offerings in the community. We are dedicated to providing leading and local customer service."

Fiber optic internet has the capacity to be about 20 times faster than traditional cable internet, and 80 times faster than DSL service. The current top speed for fiber optic service is 10 gigabits per second while most cable providers fall between 100 and 300 megabits per second for residential service. A gigabit is 1,000 megabits.

Prospective customers can pre-register on the Wire 3 check availability form to be alerted when construction begins in the area and lock in early adopter pricing at wire3.com.

Metronet of Evansville, Ind., announced it will soon bring ultra-high-speed fiber optic internet service directly to homes and businesses of Daytona Beach, Holly Hill and Ormond Beach. Metronet will fund the project through a private multimillion-dollar investment.

Metronet's two-year construction process will begin this summer with the first customers able to receive service before the end of 2022.

Only about 40% of households in the U.S. have access to symmetrical upload and download gigabit (1,000 mbps) speeds that only fiber optic networks can provide.

"Metronet is thrilled to provide Daytona Beach and its neighbors with a 100% fiber optic internet infrastructure that will allow residents and businesses to improve their online lives," said John Cinelli, Metronet CEO, in a news release. "As the home of the Daytona 500, they know a little something about speed and understand the impact this will have on the city's continued growth and economic development."

Metronet plans to hire local market management positions, sales and customer service professionals, and service technicians to support the Daytona Beach area.
