FTTH drives Portuguese pay

Growth in Portugal's pay-TV sector is being driven by FTTH offers.

According to data published by the regulator ANACOM, at the end of 2022 96.4% of households opted for pay-TV services, or 2.7pp more than a year earlier. The number of subscriptions stood at 4.5 million, or 136,000 (+3.1%) more than a year earlier.

The number of FTTH subscribers increased by 258,000 (+10.4%) during the year to reach 2.7 million. The growth was down to both new customers and switching from other networks. As of the end of 2022 FTTH accounted for 60.8% of total subscribers, followed by cable (28.1%), DTH (8%) and ADSL (3%).

The number of residential pay-TV subscribers stood at 4 million, 113, 000 more (+2.9%) than in the previous year, and represented 89.1% of total subscribers.

Non-residential subscribers amounted to 490,000 (10.9% of the total), up 4.8% on the previous year.

At the end of 2022, Meo was the provider with the highest share of pay-TV subscribers (41.1%), followed by Grupo Nos (37%), Vodafone (18. 8%) and Nowo (2.9%). Vodafone and Meo were the providers that, in net terms, captured the most subscribers compared to the previous year, with their shares having increased by 0.6pp and 0.5pp., respectively. On the other hand, the shares of Grupo Nos (-0.8pp (and NOWO (-0.3pp) decreased.

In the residential segment, Meo held the highest share (39.5%), followed by Grupo Nos (38.1%), Vodafone (19%) and Nowo (3.2%).

The shares of Vodafone and MEO increased (+0.5pp and +0.4pp respectively), while the shares of Grupo Nos and Nowo registered decreases (-0.7pp and -0.3pp respectively).
